Master PHotoESPAÑA group show: Encounters in the present tense
From September 23 until November 14, 2020 I am showing some of my most recent photographic work at Centro de Arte Alcobendas in Madrid; the result of an ongoing research regarding the self-portrait and the representation of the female body that I have been working on during my studies at the Master PHotoESPAÑA.
An exercise for the course with Gerardo Mosquera triggered the research of authors who have worked with the self-portrait in photography and whose work I have used as reference for my new work, from the surrealists Dora Maar, YVA and Lee Miller, passing through the Ukrainian-American filmmaker Maya Deren, Cuban artist Ana Mendieta, Korean-American artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, among others. All of these authors have delved into the personal experience as women of their times, the latter being migrants and dealing with exile, forced migration, uprooting, the unconscious, the yearning for the homeland and death.
Desde el 23 de septiembre hasta el 14 de noviembre de 2020 expongo algunos de mis trabajos fotográficos más recientes en el Centro de Arte Alcobendas, resultado de una investigación en curso sobre el autorretrato y la representación del cuerpo femenino que he estado desarrollando durante mis estudios en el Master PHotoESPAÑA.
Un ejercicio para el curso con Gerardo Mosquera ha sido el detonante de la investigación sobre autoras que han trabajado con el autorretrato en la fotografía y que he utilizado como referencias para mi nuevo trabajo, desde las surrealistas Dora Maar, YVA y Lee Miller, pasando por la cineasta ucraniana-estadounidense Maya Deren, la artista cubana Ana Mendieta, y la artista coreano-estadounidense Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Todas estas autoras han profundizado en la vivencia personal como mujeres de su época, siendo éstas últimas migrantes y lidiando con el exilio, la migración forzada, el desarraigo, el inconsciente, el anhelo de la tierra natal y la muerte.

Since art is the maximum expression of freedom, my objective through these series of self-portraits is to explore the understanding of consciousness and show the body in its purest state: a state that is neither fixed nor permanent but in constant motion. My female body is my main medium and I use my physical presence in space as a symbol to highlight the fact that body and mental identities are concepts in constant transformation, evolution and expansion. The body is pure energy and energy, as we well know, is never born nor dies, it is merely transformed. The photos are not manipulated in any way, reality is captured in its purest essence.

Puesto que el arte es la máxima expresión de la libertad, mi objetivo a través de estas series de autorretratos es explorar en la comprensión de la conciencia y mostrar el ser en su estado mas puro: un estado que no es fijo ni permanente sino que está en constante movimiento. Mi cuerpo femenino es mi medio principal y utilizo mi presencia física en el espacio como un símbolo para resaltar el hecho de que la identidad corporal y mental son conceptos en constante transformación, evolución y expansión. El cuerpo es pura energía y la energía, como bien sabemos, nunca nace ni muere, sino que se transforma. Las fotos no están manipuladas de ninguna manera, lo real se captura en su más pura esencia.

This exhibition brings together a group of photographers who have developed projects in parallel during the period of the course, and have shared ideas and experiences under the constant activity of learning and reflection that takes part in the PHotoESPAÑA Master in Photography. Theory and Artistic Projects. Each of these projects embodies the commitment and drive for growth in their individual approaches and their way of understanding the medium. Aware of the difficulty involved in addressing the world of images in the present (their saturation and the difficulty of penetrating the anesthetic veil produced by the repetition of stimuli), the work of these photographers formulates new questions along with other timeless ones about of the landscape, the abstraction, the body, the portrait, the appropriation, the archive or the creation of a personal narrative. The result is a fascinating accumulation of answers, sometimes diametrically different, which nevertheless share the appeal of being the result of a deep, rigorous and honest individual exploration about the real possibilities of the photographic medium today.

Esta exposición reúne a un grupo de fotógrafos que han desarrollado proyectos en paralelo durante el periodo de un curso, han compartido ideas y experiencias bajo la actividad constante de aprendizaje y reflexión que supone tomar parte en el Máster PHotoESPAÑA en Fotografía. Teoría y Proyectos Artísticos.
El impulso de crecimiento se materializa aquí en el compromiso de cada uno de estos proyectos con sus planteamientos individuales y su modo de entender el medio.
Conscientes de la dificultad que conlleva abordar en el presente el mundo de las imágenes, (la saturación de las mismas y la dificultad de traspasar el velo anestésico que produce la repetición de estímulos) el trabajo de estos fotógrafos formula preguntas nuevas junto a otras intemporales acerca del paisaje, la abstracción, el cuerpo, el retrato, la apropiación, el archivo o la creación de una narrativa personal.
El resultado es un fascinante cúmulo de respuestas, a veces diametralmente distintas, que sin embargo comparten el atractivo de ser el resultado de una exploración individual profunda, rigurosa y honesta acerca de las posibilidades reales del medio fotográfico en la actualidad.
